Do People Learn To Ignore?

by scw on 11/03/2011

I had a strange thought the other night while lying in bed.  I thought to myself “what if people learn to ignore?” My answer is yes.

Nobody can deny that children are more susceptible to paranormal activity. Why are adults not?

I think that people learn to ignore a variety of different things as we grow older, one of them being paranormal activity.

Think about it this way: if you put a dollar on your kitchen counter, you notice it every time you walk by; after a while, you will walk by without noticing it at all, then a little while longer you forget its there all together.  The only thing that changed was the amount of time that went by.

Now take paranormal activity: when you’re born and very young you start to notice things, but of course don’t remember them.  As you grow you are still noticing or seeing things and starting to remember. Parents telling their kids that nothing is there along with trying to explain the occurrences with logical reasons cause the noticing of the paranormal to diminish. By the time a person is in their teens they don’t notice things at all and forget about it completely.

It may seem kind of confusing but I am unsure of how to word my explanation.  People can learn to do anything, so why not learn to ignore? After all, isn’t ignorance bliss?

If people did not learn to ignore it, I would put money on it that almost everybody would take note of the paranormal.

The thought of anything paranormal usually makes a person scared. Why? Because all they see are movies about demons and evil spirits as well as so little knowledge about the paranormal. We know very, very little about it. Even when something is discovered, most people have ignored the paranormal for so long that they don’t believe it is real and still try to explain the happening with logical reasons.  Therefore, very few discoveries stick even when there is no logical reason that can explain the occurrence that is being put forth as evidence.

However; even though most people ignore the paranormal world, it is gaining interest as people start to realize that not everything can be explained.  More and more people are starting to view it differently since all the ghost shows have become popular.  Hopefully this interest continues to rise so that we can learn what really goes on in the paranormal world as well as what spirits, entities, and demons are truly capable of. I think that we could learn so much from the dead, and I mean literally if we could talk to them.

What do you think about this?

I have experienced episodes of paranormal activity, and it might have freaked me out for a minute. By freaking out I don’t mean calling ghost hunters and having ambiances. Just got a little nervous. So one day I talked to a friend that spent a large part of her childhood playing at my house and she gave me some of the history. After that the noises didn’t bother me. There might be a small chance I’m ignoring it, but I don’t think so. Guess I’m just used too it. Of course we have a nice ghost. :)

In my personal opinion being used to something and learning to ignore it is a very thin line. It is hard for me to distinguish where the line is actually drawn.

If you notice things try to write them down as a running “diary” of sorts to see how often the same types of noises are repeated and how often. If you are detailed enough you should be able to pick out differences in the sounds and then know weather there is something there or it is random house noises.

I think people ignore things and situations so they can choose not to deal with them.

That is very true. My underlying point in this article is that we could learn alot more about spirits and entities if people did not choose to ignore. People ignore the unknown because the unknown usually frightens people. But then again, everything was unknown at one point in time of another. :P

Unlike most people I fear very little. I am quite the social butterfly so I asked people that had a history in our house in order to gain a better understanding. During my quest I learned that a man died in our bedroom and that he was a nice man. I figured that as long as it was a friendly spirit than I had little to be concerned about.
My Great- Grandmother passed away in her rocking chair when I was a young girl . A few years later my aunt moved in and I spent many summers there working on the farm. As a young girl I wasn’t quite so brave, so when I found out I had to sleep upstairs in the same room as my grandmothers rocking chair. I was scared to death until I heard grandma’s chair rocking. I have found comfort in spirits every since. I figure since they aren’t demons so life is good! I love how you jog my memory:)
